WATCH MAGAZINES - are you subscribed to any ? What's your favourite ?

So I just bought my latest copy of watchtime magazine and occasionally buy revolution which is ok , I sometimes venture up london and buy the lightning magazine which is a Japanese watch mag , if your into vintage watches it's a great one in my opinion .

I occasionally pick up a copy of SalonQP at the airport, but for the most part my watch news comes from here, or Hodinkee.

I really enjoyed SalonQP and found that I couldn't seem to get a copy other than in an airport. I've recently ditched my MS Surface for an iPad and have now signed up for the subscription.

I find the editorial and articles in SalonQP really good. The only downside is that they don't publish often enough!

I also signed up for Watchtime as well. It's not bad, but waaaaay to many adverts.

Revolution is the best as regards qp and watchtime. Beats them easily.Whats this lightning mag? I'm into vintage and never heard of it.Is it in Japanese or is their an English version?

It's Japanese and £25 per copy but it's an amazing mag , I can only find it the Japan store in soho

SalonQP for me too - used to look out at airports or large train stations (often hidden in WH Smith's in Waterloo), but now subscribe and delivered to my door

I received subscriptions to both QP and Revolution from Santa last Xmas (nice One Santa !).
Revolution is Quarterly and I think QP is Bi-monthly.
I usually prefer Revolution but enjoy both.
QP now has a Vintage section which I've found very interesting.

P.S. I also ordered the Hodinkee magazine a couple of weeks ago but it hasn't appeared yet !

I used to buy Watchtime but it's really changed over the last few years and so I tend to pick up QP, which I enjoy.

Picked up the latest issue of Revolution yesterday

I have a subscription to QP as it was on offer a while ago but have never heard of the others mentioned here.

I live/work in Indonesia a lot and occasionally pick up WOW over here which is actually OK.

I get bought a QP subscription each year otherwise i wouldn't bother. I've normally seen a lot of the watches in it by the time it is out.
Revolution is very good, found a copy in France recently, i never see it anywhere.

From the pictures you posted, they just look a bit like expensive Rolex / Omega adverts that you have to pay for! Is there much in the way of smaller brands and general industry talk in any of those? Am genuinely interested as I have never seen one in person.

i have a free subscription to QP, i shoot for them so shouldn’t have to pay :eagerness: (that's my Bulgari shot on this issues cover)
i do like the technical/history articles but my favourite is the ‘treasured possession’ at the back as if i get to shoot that it’s usually somebody interesting to chat to while shooting their watch.

The Japanese mags are great, got a few here.

All the British mags seem very stuffy in comparison.

I used to like QP a lot a few years ago - lots of interesting articles about a good range of watches from Seiko up. My favourite articles were almost always written by Ken Kessler. QP now is a very different magazine IMO - too focused on the luxe brands.

It'd be good to have a summary of what each magazine focuses on. Something like QP of old, covering budget watches, history, how watches work, etc. (not just the latest expensive new watches) would be of interest.

Can you read Japanese?

TBH I can get by just by looking at the pics and reading the spec which always seems to be in English.

I like Revolution as a magazine, I have bought all the others in the past but this one is in a league of its own. I usually buy it in WHS.

Last issue had a big feature on Buzz Aldrin and Speedmasters.

I recently bought a Korean magazine that features a different each issue Brand and covers everything on it. The Issue was about Rolex and it had a lot of interesting articles. It was in English.

Japanese Magazines are Fantastic, I can not read Japanese so it makes making BanDia Gundam Robot models a challenge for sure.

i like most things Japanese, hence a big fan of JDM watches.

I'm subscribed to SalonQP, but it's released too infrequently to cure my watch watching itch!

I'm tempted to sign up for Watchtime, but might have to look into some of the ones mentioned here.

I seem to get a book from Christopher Ward every few months too, which is always nice.

I might have to request some catalogues too!

Blancpain send me Lettres du Brassus every now and again; that's normally a very good read. I also pick up a copy of the Omega magazine when I see one passing through an airport. Can anybody think of any other manufacturers periodicals that might be worth a scan - apart from PP of course but you have to own one of their watches?

Whilst I haven’t subscribed to any specific watch publications the free Speedy Tuesday magazine received from Omega for being on the Speedy Tuesday waiting list (didn’t get one though, sob) was extremely insightful and well written. Maybe other brands could do likewise?

Wouldn't mind getting a copy of that Lightning Vintage Watch Bible. Looks well worth it just for the pictures.

Only places I can find online want silly postage costs so maybe a trip to the shop in Soho...

EVO is probably my favourite.

Building, PW & Modus I only read "because I have to". There is certainly little enjoyment.

For the price of the variety of watch magazines I find in WH Smith’s (Salon QP, Watchtime) the Big Book of Watches by Esquire always seems to be a steal for the amount of content.

Seems to have a good mix of affordable and ultra high end too.

Take a look on the internet and teach yourself 'katakana' - literally should only take you two or three days.

Written Japanese uses three character sets;
- Kanji is the complex one derived from Chinese
- Hiragana are simpler characters where the kanji words can be spelt out phonetically
- Katakana are also phonetic, but are used for Japanese words that are borrowed from other languages

There are only 46 basic characters, and (honestly!) they are easy to learn. So because Rolex is a non-Japanese word, it is spelt out using the four characters RO-RE-KU-SU. Nomos would be NO-MO-SU. Once you know those, you can read quite a lot from the Japanese magazines even without getting into kanji.
