Mark at Watchrepair UK posted up a "hello" a few weeks back.
his post was removed for reasons unknown to me, I however sent off my 16613 for a service as it was looking a tad battle scarred and had an unknown history (I bought it secondhand in the sandpit)

Been wearing it since it came back from a service last week.

I had said to Mark I was confident the date was right but the timekeeping was typically "Rolex"

I know "Twixt" is not the best iPoop app but it does work (I checked it manually, as best I could)

For a clunky old Rolex, that is pretty good . . . . time is averaged over 3 days on the twixt screen dump above.
Watch came back polished (very lightly, still sharp everywhere)
Cost was a fraction of what I was expecting.

I'm very impressed.

For me to buy a Breitling is a considerable diversion from my usual path. So to an extent it needs some explanation.
Not that I have slagged them off particularly, but I have made it fairly clear that I have little respect for what they do.
I bought it because it was offered at what I considered to be a fairly flippable price and at the same time it was the model, of all their range, that I actually like the look of. I have some respect for the classic Navitimer, but it is much too vinage looking for me to feel like wearing it. It also offered me an opportunity to experience owning one and go forward with a more informed opinion. I have had it since this morning and I have had time to look at it and play around with it.
This FWIW is what I think

The case is very well made and pleasing to look at and feel. Largely because it is made in 18ct, it has a great weight and balance, something I find is often the case with a Gold watch on leather.
The dial is nicely made the MOP works well and the very good AR crystal gives a great view of it. I like the subdials and they look well made. The 8 diamonds are at least F in colour and look to be very clear. I like the crown and pushers , they seem to be well made and look great, as do the crown guard moldings on the case.

The movement is a 7750. There is no exhibition back, so I guess they haven't done anything to it other than pay for it and screw it in. Nothing wrong with a 7750 it will function fine I am sure. It isn't exactly at the Zenith of Chronograph design (pun intended) but it is reliable and OK.

There is a certain cache which is entirely absent when you wear a Breitling. You are not wearing it for what it means in horology nor are you wearing it out of respect for what it stands for. You wear it because it is a nice watch, that's it. At 39mm it is a nice size it wears about the same size as a Daytona which for me is on the small size but OK.

The down side;

It's a Breitling
It's a 7750 in a watch with a MRP of £12000 (not in terrible company there)
The deployant is dreadful. Cheap and nasty would be an understatement. Uncomfortable would be a kindness.
It has a brown strap, certainly a crime in my book.

The upside;

Very well made
Looks very nice.
Great dial
Feels great
I quite like it

Overall Not as bad as I expected. Not at all as good as it should be. With a great movement it would be a very good watch. A Daytona eats it for breakfast without even a burp.

Some pics

but seems I (and NASA) was wrong. Interesting, I read this at TZ Omega Forum.

"One of the reasons that NASA chose a manual wind watch for space flight crew use was that they wanted a chronograph and automatic chronographs would not be perfected until 1969. In addition NASA had the mistaken belief gravity needed to be present in order to cause the Rotor to work.
As Newton described objects at rest tend to stay at rest unless acted upon by a force. When the watch is moved, the rotor wants to stay put. Since its center of mass (somewhere in the middle of the rotor plate) is not its center of effort (the rotor shaft), it spins. Along the way, it winds the watch. However, what is important in this equation isn't gravity, but rather Inertia...

To see a demonstration of how Inertia works on a automatic watch take any display back watch automatic or an automatic with the caseback off and hold the watch with the dial down.... One can easily set the rotor spinning moving the watch in a circular motion. Gravity doesn't play a significant part, because the rotor is more or less level gravity isn't acting on it in a significant way. The inertia from from moving the watch around is what moves the rotor and winds the watch. Inertia is a magical thing.

So, Automatics will work in Space. In fact if the watchmakers had been 5-10 years earlier with the creation of the automatic chronograph complication, the moonwatch might have sported a Valjoux 7750, a Lemania 1342, or a Lemania 5100 under the dial instead of manual wind movement."

Since the 1967 reissue was to big, I bought the cheaper Amphibia model 090916, which basicly looks the same, but just a bit smaller (still a big piece of metall though).

This one

However I didn't like the polished case (really looks like a huge mirror), but I thought the case was chromed and brushing take of the chrome and leave a "gold-ish" case :upset:

It's not! It's stainless steel! :icon_biggrin:

So popped the bezel of and gave it a very light sunburst brushing.... really makes the diffence imho.

Vostok should have made this as well, there is another beadblasted version available.... but brushed seems to fit this design better I think.

So after another weekend of the sprogs complaining that a ride in the 335i coupe I'm toying with the idea of a v8 4x4 as an alternate motor (I'm keeping the coupe for now). I've never had a 4x4 but I know quite a few chaps on here have so I'd value your advice. I don't want to spend that much as I won't be doing that many miles in it and I'm also looking at keeping the tax down by getting a pre 2006. I've come across a couple on the autotrader.

First is a 2005 x5, 50k 4.4 v8 at £7995

http://www.asjdrummondltd.co.uk/used...01319513317917

Second is the range rover, 2003, 64k at £9995

http://www.beckside4x4.co.uk/used-ca...01316509867551

Both would be straight sale so I'm guessing I can get a discount. My heart says range rover, head says bmw and spend the change on an LPG conversion.

Any advice welcome!

Well, the better half thought it would be a good idea to cook something off the piste tonight and before I could suggest a fugu fish sashimi or elephant sweetbreads fois gras salad and nonsense like that we are having a pierogi tonight :)

Anyhow, I have not had a proper pierogis since I was ten or something so I've just experienced a major flashback from my childhood.. fresh sourdough, fish pie filling, meat, (not in one pierog though) spices and that unmistakable cooked pie umph :) Bloody fantastic!

Anyway, wht's yours? :)
